Job Description

  1. Provide musical leadership for the tone chime choir, adult bell choir, adult choir and kids choir/bells for the months of September through May.
  2. For the summer months, the music minister will encourage special music and schedule musicians from within and outside of the congregation to provide music each Sunday.
  3. The music minister will have the duel goal of encouraging musical competency and building faith in Jesus Christ. The church mission of “building relationships to share Jesus” will be lived out through the music ministry.  A devotional time and prayer should be incorporated into each gathering of musicians.  A successful music ministry will provide quality music to enhance worship and grow disciples of Jesus Christ.
  4. Part of “building relationships to share Jesus” will be to build relationships with church members and non-church members, providing them a space to explore, increase and share their musical talents to the glory of God. The music minister will place special emphasis on recruitment and training, encouraging musical and leadership talents in all participants.
  5. Responsibilities will include
    1. Minimum of 1 hour of practice for each adult choir performance
    2. Minimum of 1 hour of practice per week for bell choir performances
    3. Minimum of 15 minutes a week for tone chimes practice
    4. Minimum of 15 min per week for kids’ choir practice
  6. The adult choir, bell choir, tone chimes and kids’ choir will provide special music at least once a month Sept-May.
  7. The music minister will select new music in consultation with the pastor, selecting pieces appropriate to the theme of worship, the season and the abilities of the musicians involved. Selected pieces should be provided to the accompanist at least 2 weeks in advance to allow for practice time.
  8. There will occasionally be special worship services (Christmas Eve, Blue Christmas, Holy Week, etc.) the music minister will be expected to participate as appropriate.
  9. The music minister will encourage other ensembles (ie. praise band, instrumentalists, etc.) to participate on occasion.
  10. The music minister will meet once a month with the pastor and/or worship development team to discuss worship themes, goals and planning.
  11. The music minister will be expected to live a lifestyle appropriate to leadership in the United Methodist Church.
  12. The music minister will be expected to attend the monthly administrative council meetings held the second Wed of each month (except July). If unable to attend a meeting it is expected he/she will submit a report to the church secretary regarding any problems, concerns or upcoming dates/events the council should be aware of.
  13. The music minister will complete Safe Sanctuary training, FBI background check and PA clearances before the start of employment.

Major areas music minister will be responsible for include

  • Select new music in consultation with the pastor
  • Meet once a month with the pastor and/or worship development team to discuss worship themes, goals and planning
  • Attend the monthly administrative council meetings held the second Wed of each month

Primary objective of music minister includes

  • Encouraging musical competency and building faith in Jesus Christ
  • Building relationships with church members and non-church members
  • Living a lifestyle appropriate to leadership in the United Methodist Church.

Job requirements

  • Broad knowledge and experience in teaching and encouraging music development in others
  • Excellent skills in communication and time management
  • Knowledge in the Christian faith and sharing this knowledge with others
  • Music degree preferred
